This is a self portrait. A self portrait of vulnerability. A self portrait about change. A self portrait about identity (but then again what self portrait isn’t). I feel like I’m figuring myself out again and realizing that I probably always will be to some extent. To convey these feelings and ideas I wanted to emphasize the layering of oil paint. To do this I painted on window screening and collaged pieces of different colors on top of one another. In doing this, I make the figurative reference of there being many layers to a person, a literal reference. Additionally, this layering causes optical shifts, furthering the idea of a person’s identity, my own, shifting. The overall image is the same, but certain parts are slightly different.
